Why was it so hard for the Irish to integrate themselves when first immigrating to the USA?
Prompt This semester we have been focusing on primary sources (those written by immigrants themselves) to explore the ideology behind the American Dream and its relation to race, ethnicity, and racism among American immigrants. The task at hand for the Information Literacy assignment is to conduct independent research on a topic that interests you related to the themes of race and diversity. Your topic could concern historical or present-day immigration, and should keep in mind at least one of the following course objectives/overarching questions:
• How and in what ways does race intersect with other group identifications or ascriptions: gender, class, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, disability, age
• What is the relationship between diversity, justice, and power
• What does it mean for individuals and institutions to exist in a multi-racial, multicultural world
• What are the various forms race and racism have taken in different places and times and what are their effects?
For this assignment, you should use a minimum of four academic sources that you found from independent research. You should cite direct quotes, paraphrased quotes, and any information that you got from a source.
Writing Up Your Research: The end result of your Information Literacy Analysis should not be a summary of your findings, such as a list of historical facts. Instead your Analysis should be a synthesis of your research findings in which you present an original argument.
Synthesis requires you to pull together two or more sources, looking for common or contrasting themes in each text. In synthesis, you search for the links between various materials in order to make your point. For this assignment, your synthesis should be at least 5 pages (double spaced) and make at least 4 references from at least 3 different sources from your own research.
