The Holy Spirit is God: How could the unity and diversity of God help us in how we live in our families, community, and world?
It is essential to know that the is God. As we will see from the study, He is called by the titles of God in Scripture. He also possesses the attributes of God. He displays the actions of God. The biblical titles of the Holy Spirit reveal He is God. The Holy Spirit has names that reveal His oneness with the Father and the Son. He is called the Spirit of God (Romans 8:9 and 1 Corinthians 3:16), the Spirit of Christ (Romans 8:9), the Spirit of His Son (Galatians 4:6), and the Spirit of Jesus Christ (Philippians 1:19)
The Holy Spirit manifests His Person to be distinct from the Father and the Son. Now, as you review those titles we just discussed, it could give you the impression that the Holy Spirit is only a display of the Father and the Son, but not distinct. That is not true.
Scripture teaches that the Holy Spirit is a distinct Person from the Father and the Son. At Jesus’ baptism (Matthew 3:16–17) where we see the Holy Spirit coming up on Jesus in the form of a dove and also the voice of the Father from heaven, by anointing Jesus (Acts 10:38), and by raising Jesus from the tomb (Romans 8:11).
The Holy Spirit has the attributes of deity.
When we talk about attributes, we are talking about the characteristics or qualities of a person that is inherent in there being. When we discuss the characteristics of God, we are talking about God’s attributes and qualities that belong to him alone. There are many attributes of deity that are described as characteristic of the Holy Spirit. Some of these attributes are as follows:
1. Spirit of life (Romans 8:2) – this passage says that God the Holy Spirit is the giver of life.
2. Spirit of truth (John 16:13) – this passage says that God the Holy Spirit guides us in truth. He helps us to see the truth.
3. Spirit of holiness (Ephesians 4:30)
4. Eternal Spirit (Hebrews 9:14)
5. Omnipresence (Psalm 139:7) – this means that the Holy Spirit is everywhere present.
6. Omniscience (1 Corinthians 12:11) – this means that the Holy Spirit knows all things.
7. Omnipotence (Job 33:4; Zechariah 4:6) – this means that the Holy Spirit is all-powerful.
