Lab 7: Digestion, Nutrition, metabolism, DIET!

Lab 7: Digestion, Nutrition, metabolism, DIET!
Purpose: To understand how food and exercise affect metabolism. To learn more about your
personal eating habits… are they healthy?
1. You will watch this news clip on food myths:
https://www.today.com/video/food-myths-debunked-whole-milk-may-be-healthier-thanskim-1172604483944
2. You will EAT, enjoy yourself after, and track results from 5 days of diet/metabolism
analysis. You can downloading these apps, use these websites:
a) https://www.choosemyplate.gov/
b) Track your food and exercise in: https://www.niddk.nih.gov/bwp or in
https://www.myfitnesspal.com/
or use your own spreadsheet
Record your observations in a spreadsheet like the one provided on CANVAS:
Send your spreadsheet to the TA as an Excel file or Google Sheets link no later than Nov 17th
2020. Your TA will collate the class data and post it by Nov 18th 2020. The Report is due on the
last day of class (Dec 2nd 2020).
Since we cannot digest macromolecules in a traditional lab setting, the formal report will reflect
your analysis of a class dataset on dietary and activity habits
The formal report is intentionally left open ended, you can construct graphs and analyze the data
as you see fit. The same structure will be required as the first formal report (i.e., Abstract, Intro,
Methods, Results, Discussion).
You are expected to generate a hypothesis and analyze the data such that you may provide an
answer to your hypothesis. Answers can support, reject, or be neutral to your hypothesis. All that
is required is that your analysis and interpretation directly relate to your hypothesis. (This is
science after all, we don’t know what the “true” answers are when we start. Sometimes, we have
more questions when we finish, that is okay) Regardless of the clarity of the outcome or lack-
there-of do your best to explain your findings based on what you know, what we’ve covered in
class, and any outside research you may have done.
***Do not overthink your hypothesis!!! It can be simple, but make sure it relates back to
digestion or, nutrition. The goal is to ask a testable question and evaluate the data in a way
that answers the question.
***You are not required to perform inferential statistics on the data. Although this would
normally be done to support your conclusions, it is beyond the scope of this class. Simply
provide analyses (graphs, tables, means, error metrics, etc.) that inform the hypothesis you
wish to test.
For the report you will be expected to generate and include a graph.
You are required to cite all sources used with intext citations and a works cited page. Even if
you are only using information from the lecture PowerPoints you are required to cite it!
