Given all that we have discussed and read in this course, should education be dismissed?
If yes, please tell us why. What are the key shortcomings of education in addressing radicalization or in being used for de-radicalization?
If no, please tell us why. What are the key advantages/possibilities of education in addressing radicalization or in being used for de-radicalization?
In answering your exam question, please consider the following sub-question that should help you answer the larger question posed:
What is radicalization? Who is a radicalized individual? What kind of cognitive/learning process does he/she go through to radicalize?
How do we know who is at risk? Where do we find them?
What are potential traits or tendencies of those labeled at risk? What environments have been suspected of harboring radicalization?
Why do they radicalize?
Can educational institutions work to prevent radicalization? If so, how? If not, why not? Who has done it or attempted to do it? Have they been successful in those efforts? Why or why not?
How do educational institutions get involved in counter-radicalization, if at all? Can they do anything better or different to improve their role?
What capacities and resources do educational institutions need in order to play a role of a “radicalization watchdog” or “de-radicalization actor”? Are those effective roles? If not, is there one to be played by education?
