Assignment Brief:
Provide a report for a client regarding advice on construction methods and techniques to offer the best solution for a new multi-storey busy city centre location.
General Requirements of the structure are;
• Maximise the site potential fully (15 storey restriction)
• Three basement levels to be included for the provision of;
• A car park, recreational area and mechanical / electrical plant areas
• Building end use to be multi-purpose, consisting of; residential, office, retail and recreational
• Future running costs and maintenance will be of significant importance
• Speed of construction is a major factor as the client wishes to maximise return Sections to be discussed:
• Deep foundations – Basements and retaining walls
• Frames – Functions and selection criteria, forms and materials
• Fire engineering – requirements and methods
• Cladding and curtain walling – functional requirements, types and materials
• Ground and Upper Floors – Multi storey buildings, options and methods of construction
• Fit out and second fix – internal division of space, raised access floors and suspended ceilings
• Roofs – Industrial Types, thermal and moisture protection (Each section caries equal marks)
Tips and Submission Details:
Drawing can be done by hand or digitally. Use of colour and clear notes/leaders is strongly advised. Explanations should be clear and concise (avoid over-explaining) and may use bullet points and/or diagrams/sketches where considered appropriate. The text of the submission will be checked through Turninitin, which is designed to detect plagiarism. Reference all material used. Use the Harvard referencing system. Where plagiarism exists work will be scored as 0%.
Marking Scheme:
Your project should be structured to include;
• Introduction • How well has the student conveyed the purpose(s) of the work, objective and questions? (5%)
• Main body • How well has the student conveyed the knowledge context of the project? How well has the student presented clear and easily understood results?

• Discussion • Quality of reasoning and deductions made from results and data; quality of discussion. (15%)
• Conclusion & recommendations • Logic and veracity of conclusions drawn (5%)
